Teach

Said in rooms,
kept in writing.

I teach in churches and in small rooms, mostly on the work of the Holy Spirit and on how people get built up rather than used up. I ran the ministry and the business as separate buildings for about ten years. That was the mistake. This page is where the two share a wall.

Working principles

What the rooms
and the companies
agree on

Four principles I keep returning to, whether the audience is a congregation, a client or my own team. Written out properly, because a principle you cannot write down is a mood.

Principle 01

People are built slowly, on purpose

Every part of my work rests on one conviction: you do not find great people, you build them, and building is slow. A developer in a small town becomes a senior engineer over years of someone bothering to teach them. A founder becomes an operator the same way. Churches have known this forever and business keeps forgetting it.

The practical version: never design a system that only works with exceptional people. Design one that produces them.

Principle 02

Expectations are a deliverable

Most project failures are not failures of work. They are failures of expectation, and expectations do not manage themselves. Say the uncomfortable thing early, when it is cheap. Put the scope in writing, not to win arguments later but to prevent them. And never let a number surprise anyone: a surprise invoice can end a relationship that ten excellent deliveries built.

I started saying this in client meetings around 2019. I now say it about marriages, churches and funding rounds, because it turns out to be about all of them.

Principle 03

Leaders cannot delegate the digital

A CEO who says "I leave the digital side to the team" is saying "I leave the customer to the team." How people find you, judge you and buy from you is not a department. It is the business, seen from outside. You do not need to write code. You need to be unable to shrug.

I wrote a first version of this in 2018 and the years since have only sharpened it. The leaders I respect most can open their own analytics and feel something.

Principle 04

Fair is a strategy, not a cost

In India, the word attached to SCube is not a framework or a platform. It is fair. Paid fairly, treated fairly, promoted fairly. That reputation took a decade to earn and it recruits better than any job listing, retains better than any perk, and sells better than any pitch.

Fairness gets booked as a cost because its returns arrive late and unlabelled. Book it anyway. It compounds like nothing else on the balance sheet.

Notes

The garden

Years of Obsidian notes are becoming a public garden at shovan.co/notes: shorter, rougher entries published when they survive rereading. It is under construction, and I would rather ship it late than pad it. If you want to know when it opens, say so on the contact page and I will tell you personally.
